This would have made such a great TV trial: Oregon standoff “hero” Ryan Bundy is about to get stripped of his right to represent himself in court because he’s unwilling to follow the judge’s instructions and has shown “open defiance” in court (pdf warning). Believe it or not, this is a good thing: since he’s not willing to express choices intelligently in court, a court-imposed attorney will insure both that he gets a fairer sentence, and that it’s less appealable.

As an aside, his behavior isn’t as crazy as one might think. Mr. Bundy is never going to get what he wants from the courts, and he’s probably going to go to prison no matter what he does, so he has no incentive to cooperate. It’s better than acknowledging that he’s just an obscure rancher with a crackpot agenda on a political fringe that has no play.
